POPULATION FIGURES FOR THE TOWN OF KYRENIA, 1878-1973
Ersi Demetriadou

The first modern population census of Cyprus took place on April 4, 1881, four years after the island’s administration passed from Ottoman to British rule. An unofficial population count was, however, taken in 1878 and the figures reported in 1880 in the Annual Report on Cyprus. The 1881 was followed by five others taken every decade. The census scheduled for 1941, took place in 1946 after the end of WWII. As in the other towns of the island, the population movement from rural to urban centers is also reflected in the Kyrenia town figures of 1946. The last census taken under British supervision was on December 11, 1960, while that planned for 1970 was taken in 1973. This was due to the 1963-1964 and 1967intercommunal troubles. In 1973, census takers were not allowed to enter the Turkish Cypriot enclaves. Therefore, population figures reported regarding the Turkish Cypriot population at that time are based on statistical estimates. Despite these difficulties, the census figures allow for the study of the town’s population and economic growth over a 100 year span and before the demographic distortions brought about by the Turkish invasion and occupation of the town in July 1974.

POPULATION OF NEIGHBORING VILLAGES

Neighboring the town of Kyrenia, are the villages of Thermia, Karakoumi, Kazafani, Bellapais, Ayios Epiktitos and Ayios Ambrosios on the east and Ayios Georgios, Templos, Trimithi and Karmi on the west. Up to the Turkish invasion on July 20, 1974 and the forceful uprooting of all Greek Cypriot inhabitants from their ancestral homes, only Kazafani and Templos had a Turkish Cypriot majority.
